Friday 20 March
A gentle morning of packing up, next to a millpond smooth Lake Wānaka, and then we said our fond farewells to Glendhu Bay Motor Camp - for now...
We set course for Driftaway Queenstown, trekking down Lake Dunstan to Cromwell where Jackson's Orchard lured us in as usual - real fruit ice cream stop of course. Strawberry & pineapple for Louis, apricot & passion fruit for me - it was quite tart!
Pushed on from there through the stunning Kawerau Gorge to Frankton. Exciting seeing the progress being made on the new cycle trail along the far side of the gorge, but still looks like there’s a lot of tricky bits to link up - I presume they’ll be adding in quite a few cantilevered sections where the geography gets a tad gnarly, and maybe a bridge or two across the gorge?

Checked into Driftaway half an hour early and had a late lunch overlooking the Frankton Arm of Lake Wakatipu from our elevated spot at the camp ground. It may be one of the most expensive sites we visit, but the view makes it all worth while!
Did the laundry, had an accident with the chia seed, and got a bit of shopping done while Louis registered for tomorrow’s big swim then cooked a creamy bacon pasta for dinner - carb loading for the swimmer (not sure what my excuse was!!) We were roundly ignored by Campsite Cat as we had finished our pasta and next door had bbq sausages!!!
Intended on having an early night before the swim - but accidentally started watching Last One Laughing and before we knew it we were 3 episodes in and it was nearly midnight… oops! 😬
