DOC - Cameron Flat
4/5
One of our favourite places to camp. This DOC is opposite the carpark for Blue Pools in the Haast Pass, and has the most stunning views. Basic facilities - long drop toilets, a shelter and non-potable water. Sunset and sunrise over the valley can be stunning - but do watch out for the sandflies! Get in early for the front row spots with a view.

Okarito Community campground
5/5
What a treasure - DOC land behind the beach at Okarito which is managed by & for the local community. Facilities include toilets, $2 showers, washing up sinks, electric BBQ and a well stocked shelter.
Highlights - birdsong, nature, beach & lagoon nearby and kōtuku white herons 🤍

DOC - Lake Paringa
4/5
A lovely stop on the West Coast between Haast & Fox. Numbered sites are tight but out of season this isn't a problem. Park up by the lake with flushing toilets, wifi and a shelter on hand. Only downside is the sandflies! Fabulous harakeke with so many tuis when in flower - wow!

DOC - MacDonalds/Otto
5/5
This DOC Camp just outside Franz Josef sits on the northern end of Lake Mapourika. There are two sections - MacDonalds by the creek is more open and Ottos's is more enclosed but with lake views. Flushing toilets and a shelter at each area. Lots of birdlife and we encountered a kea!

Top Ten - Fox Glacier
4/5
Top Ten with all the facilities inc dump station, power & water, bins, laundry, kitchens & bathrooms. Many spots are quite small and sloped but we had #145 and pulled through which was perfect for a big van.
Highlight - it's walking distance to Betsey Jane, our favourite restaurant on the West Coast!

DOC - Gillespies Beach
5/5
At the end of a 10km gravel road, this DOC camp has the best views of the Southern Alps and Fox Glacier on a clear day. Flushing toilets and a shelter. Lots of historic gold mining equipment abandoned in the dunes, a stunning beach and some cool walks.
