Adieu Albert Town, G'Day Glendhu Bay!

Tuesday 17 March

After 4 nights at Albert Town, we decided to see a different side of Wānaka so used the autumn getaway special deal at Glendhu Bay Holiday Park to book three nights on power with a lakeside view - $44 per night.

A glorious sunrise to start the day then we packed up and were on the road by 11ish, after a lovely send off from the ducks and a good long chat with Kelly who owns the POP over in Haast. With time to kill before check in, we stocked up on a few groceries, perused the good, the bad & the ugly at Wānaka Wastebusters and spent an age at the dump station because it was so busy!

Then we trundled out to Glendhu Bay and set up camp on Site 61, with a stunning view of the lake.

Had a late lunch (fillet of sole for me - on "reduced to clear" at New World 🎉) while overlooking the mirror calm lake and some SUP-ers. Then an hour or so later, we inflated the Razor kayak and set out for Louis to swim 3-4km while I paddled alongside.

Turned out we’d left it too late and the afternoon wind had whipped up, stirring waves and the odd white cap and determinedly blowing the kayak back to shore! It was fun for the first hundred metres or so but after about 20 minutes of fighting I gave up and left Louis to finish his swim while the wind & the kayak whizzed me back to the beach! Such a shame as the views around this arm of Lake Wānaka are stunning - looking back at the camp, north to the Aspiring National Park and south to Russ' Dad's Peak (Russ' Dad was called Roy!).

Constructed tortillas for dinner and spent a lovely chill evening in Banjo as autumn evening temperatures in the mountains are hardly conducive to sitting outdoors!
