Rainy Morning at FJ & on to Otto's Corner
Friday 2 October
After a busy few days at Franz Josef NZMCA, it was almost time to leave. Chilly, damp morning spent packing up Banjo, doing the laundry at the coin wash on Cron St and topping up our fridge & pantry supplies at Four Square before lunch. Slightly unimpressed that I got charged a surcharge on a surcharge for paying online at the laundry as requested - $6 wash, plus 60c service fee PLUS 13c payment fee!
Louis went out for an early morning cycle but hit the coldest, wettest patch of the day so was soon back warming up by the diesel heater in Banjo!
After lunch (reheated green curry leftovers for Louis & chicken salad for me) we hitched up, used the NZMCA dump station then hit the road - around 10km north to the DOC Camp at MacDonald/Otto Creek, top end of Lake Mapourika. There are two sections where you can camp - MacDonalds to the right by the creek or Otto’s Corner to the left, closer to the lake. Both had flushing toilets which is quite a luxury at a DOC Camp - love the wet wipes signage here... eye-catching, rhyming and to the point!
We checked out both then booked a spot in Otto’s and parked up in the rain. It never really dried up so we hung out inside, waiting impatiently for Celebrity Traitors to show up on the VPN! And it did not disappoint 🤣🤣🤣
