Sunday 23 August
Easy-going Sunday with the Websters. The clouds were rolling in bringing cold, wet & grey weather for the most part when we awoke - just the occasional blast of blue sky & sunshine - and the weather was pretty blah all day.
Debs & Jonny headed off to the gym & church while Louis swam at the pool in town and I caught up with some blogging. We all reconvened at the house late morning, grabbed a bite to eat then headed to Cromwell to check out the Daffodil Day Vintage Car Rally. Sadly we got there a bit late - it was scheduled to run 11am-2pm and we turned up around 1pm-ish - the weather had brought the event to an early close so there were only a few cool vehicles left to enjoy. Louis & Jonny chatted to a couple of the owners including a guy with a vintage pick-up truck who Jonny knew from school or bike or church connections. I loved the British Racing Green Daimler - kinda like our wedding car which was a Mark2 Jaguar.
Debs and I were also very taken with the 1939 Plymouth with its white wall tires and plush velvety interior! We loved it so much we got a mirror selfie in a shiny hubcap!
We wandered through the historic precinct, browsed a few stores then headed to Te Puna Mahara - Cromwell Memorial Events Centre - a brand new facility that serves as a theatre, museum, live music space and community hub and only opened on 18 July. (And yes, we all just wanted to call it Hakuna Matata!)
It was a very impressive space - the museum was fascinating with its focus on local history, environment, gold mining and farming, and I loved the Māori weaving exhibition - Te Whiri Tuku Iho o Roka: Roka's Woven Legacy.
A lovely snack at the cafe then we wandered back through the precinct, past a bit of a doer-upper stone house, then drove back to Springvale where we hunkered down as the winds roared around us. Siesta time, then Jonny cooked us ribs for dinner and we enjoyed the second episode of “Ludwig”. No Agatha Christie Bingo… I think that’s heading back to the op shop!!
