Taking the Low Road back to Ohau B

Friday 14 March

After taking the high road to the Obelisk the day before, we stuck to the fairly low road - summiting Lindis Pass at a mere 971m as we headed back to Twizel and the Ohau B Canal.

The morning light over the hills and vales of Springvale was exquisite - a golden sunrise behind the house, but the gentlest mistiest pastel hues out to the west. We packed up fairly quickly and were still bathed in early morning light as we left Jonny & Deb's place around 9ish.

The route took us up the eastern side of the stunning Lake Dunstan, on SH 8 to Bendigo. The lake was beautifully calm & reflective, with fine puffs of cloud skirting the surrounding hills and cliffs along the way.

From Cromwell upwards the cloud cleared leaving blue skies reflected in the blue waters below.

Compulsory stop in Tarras of course - time for morning tea (patrami on pretzel bun for Louis and cheese scone for me). Also checked out the Shrek statue and the Bendigo Wine store was open for the first time - the design aesthetic was so beautiful with a dried flowers wall along the back.

Despite this delay, we still made it through the Lindis Pass and on to the Ohau B camping area by lunchtime in time to snag a canalside spot.

A wander round Twizel to collect my latest prescription, then a stroll over to the salmon farm to book dinner for Saturday night - exciting!

Louis stayed back at Banjo for some R&R as the sciatica kicked in, but I went for a big walk over to Lake Ruataniwha to get my Fitbit steps and check out the location for the big swim in the morning.

BBQ lamb burgers for dinner in the evening sun then we climbed the hill behind us to watch for the lunar eclipse/blood moon. Took a while to spot it and it was more shady pink but kinda cool!
