Snow, Snow and More Snow

Wednesday 11 June

We woke to a rather snowy landscape though the melt had already begun. Louis and I wandered over to the High Country Salmon farm for a coffee & Danish mid-morning (and a cheeky toilet visit). Met Abby & Jez at the shop there and we each bought a bunch of fresh salmon 🧡

We popped into Twizel for a few chores and checked with the highways guy on the likelihood of the road to Tekapo opening and he reckoned about 1.30 so we all packed up after lunch and hit the road around 2ish.

As we drove cautiously towards Lake Pukaki the snow around us was getting deeper, but with the low cloud cover everywhere looked rather grey and monochromatic.

We pressed on through even lower cloud which reduced visibility considerably, but the landscapes soon opened out again and we made it safely to Tekapo within an hour.

We had thought the snow from several days back would have melted by now, but it was piled up deep along the roadsides and at the NZMCA park only the road in and a few spaces were clear - everywhere else the snow was still about a foot deep!

Harley was fascinated - and very prancy as he disappeared up to his armpits with each step!! Took a walk in others’ footsteps to the lake & back then thawed out on our vans before Louis BBQed us pork chops for dinner.

Currently catching up on my socials reporting in a warm Banjo while Starlink struggles with the winter weather and keeps taking us offline!
