Saturday Market in Nelson

Saturday 11 January

Market day in Nelson - the forecast threatened rain but delivered only light drizzle occasionally, however it couldn’t diminish the vibrancy of this lovely institution. We first visited about 9 years ago and always look forward to coming back - every Saturday morning for more than 40 years, Nelson Market has opened its arms to hosts of local producers of fruit & veg, exciting food & drink products, pottery, arts, crafts, clothing and other unique creations.

We wandered lots, bought oli bol & mini pancakes from the Dutch stall and Linus and I bought a skirt each from a funky stall. She also embarrassed herself with an aubergine on the veggie stall and made the stall holders giggle!

Said hello to lots of dogs and listened to a cool improv band made up of PNG fruit pickers who are in Nelson for the fruit season.

We went on a bit of a wild goose chase for lunch - the Boat Shed brunch menu was great, but lunch was an altogether more expensive affair; the Boat House wasn't picking up our calls (turned out it was hosting a wedding) and so we ended up at Sprig & Fern back at Tahunanui, which had never heard of salad or green veg!! Loved the fish door on the Beach Road as we wandered, and was fascinated by these two classic cars parked casually in an open garage!

A dozy afternoon back at Banjo, before Louis and Amy decided to go off on a cycle ride and Linus and I went for a lovely walk on the beach, watching a kite surfer & two incredible kite foilers plus meeting more assorted dogs including Jack the Jack Russell and his owner, Russell!

Looking out to sea there were blue skies and fancy clouds, but behind us, over the hills the clouds were coming lower and lower, foretelling the evening's weather!

We all made it back to Banjo for dinner before the heavens opened and flooded the estuary next to us making it look beautiful.
