Sunday 6 July
Finally a sunny day in Otago so we actually got to witness the beauty of the roads out to Port Chalmers and Sawyers Bay where we’ve been staying. A quick trip into town along the harbour road to do some chores, then back over the hill with some stunning views.
Said farewell to our lovely hosts Wayne & Dianne at Sawyers Bay with the offer to come back and stay again any time 🥰
We trundled down SH1 again through Dunedin, Waihola and Milton then headed inland through the Manuka Gorge to Lawrence, another historic gold town.
Our home for the next two nights was at the Kirkwoods’ POP just outside town on an old property where Glenice Kirkwood had grown up with her 10 siblings!
It was quiet and still with just the birds serenading up - kereru, tui, piwakawaka and the honking of pūtangitangi who apparently nest high in the dead tree next door!
The field behind where we were parked is apparently planted with thousands of daffodils, and come spring it is quite the tourist attraction as the hillside erupts with yellow trumpeting blooms - I hope we can come back to witness this, it sounds amazing!
I had a quick wander back towards town and met a grumpy horse, then we had dinner in Banjo as the grounds around us lit up in the dark like Christmas! There were so many fairy lights, glitterballs, solar lights and projections - it was amazing!
