Introducing Garth the Kunekune

Sunday 29 June

Beautiful day to be on the move. Awoke to a gorgeous gentle golden sunrise to the east and a pastel pink sky to the west... and no more rain!

I made my third attempt at a beach walk along Kakanui, but the allegedly lowish tide was threatening to cut me off so only went half a km or so before turning back and doing a spot of gemstone hunting. I began to realise the jeopardy when I turned to look back up the beach towards Cape Wanbrow up near Oamaru, and realised my gum boot footprints were being washed away by the waves - oops!

Packed up and headed out of Old Bones around noon and hit SH1 northbound.

Pulled over at St Andrews for lunch in Banjo overlooking the sea then trekked on to Timaru and thence Temuka.

We’d booked a night at @ustins Milford Store POP which had great reviews, a kunekune pig called Garth and a cute light display at night. Turning up mid afternoon we were the only ones there, and so it would remain. We met the owners Tracey & Craig with their dogs Frank & Hugo, and Garth snuffled over to the fence to welcome us with a series of grunts and snorts! Louis had a wee siesta and I thought he was snoring away - turned out to be Garth snuffling and snortling away in his paddock next door!

As sun set I took a wander down the empty local roads and came back to cook dinner and watch more PokerFace!
