If it Weren't for your Gum Boots...

Thursday 1 May

Trying to get ahead of the weather and potential road closures we packed up in the freezing rain and hit the rather flooded road to Hororata then on to CHC.

Everywhere we went there was flooding - at the McKeowns garage, across the roads, in the drainage ditches beside the roads, in the fields - and the rivers were raging torrents of ugly brown dirty waters from bank to bank and beyond, where usually a small channel in the braided river bed might hold a narrow stream of glacial blue water.

We left Abby & Jez at Ballooning Canterbury and pushed on through to Kaiapoi. Pulling into Treehouse Retreat POP we were alarmed to see most of the land was under water but there was a small island we could park up on.

Spent the afternoon in Rangiora stocking up our food supplies and most importantly hunting down the all important Kiwi Red Band gumboots!

Dear reader - please know we gave these grim looking pickles a swerve! But the same could not be said of the Coffee Culture baked caramello cheesecake, a slice of which came home with us for dinner!

Louis went back to Banjo for a snooze and I hung out with Ella, the hoodlum hounds and her wood burner.

Headed back to Banjo for dinner after than - then called the twins to wish them a happy 21st birthday and tackled some photo sorting. Early night with the rain still beating down outside.
