Monday 9 June
Waking up at the Camp at Hāwea never disappoints - these days sunrise is well after 8am so you can have a lie in 🦁 and still enjoy the dawn light!
The skies brightened as the day went on - we popped into Wānaka for a bit of restocking of things we forgot yesterday and I got a pair of ski pants from Sallies for $30 in case we hit snow at any point.
After lunch Louis decided to brave the chilly waters of the lake for a wee dip… he plunged in, took about four strong strokes and did a swift U-turn and headed back to shore shouting out a load of expletives concerning the temperature of the water and his body!!! The air temperature was around 4*C and the water was well under 10*C - utterly bonkers!
Harley and I took a late afternoon walk into Hāwea and enjoyed the views up the lake - he was very perturbed on our return over the dam/bridge to see 4 sheep happily grazing outside their field on the corner of the road, and was keen to volunteer to round them back up again!!! I called the council as directed online when I googled escaped livestock - bu they did not seem as concerned as Harley was!
The light over the mountains behind the lake was gloriously golden as the evening drew in - just stunning.
After an early dinner in the Moho, the Tomkinsons settled in for more Line of Duty and Louis & I rekindled the fire pit that some other campers had lit previously, and sat out under the moon watching the flames and marvelling at how lucky we are to be able to do things like this 🥰
