Chilling at Glenmac

Saturday 28 March

Taking it easy as Louis was still feeling rough and frankly, some days just need to be slow. Glenmac encourages this - gentle silence, punctuated only by birdsong and the odd baaing or mooing of farm animals.

It was an uncertain day weather wise so I left Louis to doze mid morning and followed the tracks across the fields and up the Otiake River valley. The sun was definitely breaking through by now as I passed the shearers shed, but still low lying cloud along the Waitaki river valley; I enjoyed watching a pair of honk-wah ducks on their morning circuits over the paddocks, before they finally settled in with the sheep.

Such a lovely walk with again, just birdsong as my accompaniment (as well as the Taskmaster podcast in one ear) - I got as far as the ford across the river and turned back with no intention of getting my trainers wetter than they already were from the dew.

Mullein, “velvet plant” or “donkey ears” - a healing herb - grew prolifically along the path, with just a few stems still flowering. Teas made from the soft fluffy leaves are reputed to cure coughs and respiratory conditions. I should have brought some back for Louis. 🤒

The Otiake River tumbles through the shrubby green valley, picking its way around rocks and stones, reminding me greatly of my childhood holidays on Dartmoor. Though the fabulous "Hey Arnold" tussock grass is definitely a Kiwi thing!

It was scorchio as I headed back to Banjo and I arrived there scarlet in the face, mopping my sweaty brow!

Took a shower in the musterers quarters as the hunters were out, put out the awning and had lunch outside then enjoyed the shade for a while longer. Frittata for lunch - using up all our veggies that were getting a bit old, and taking advantage of the kitchen facilities while the hunters are out.

Chatted with the farm manager and his dogs later (two of them posed but one was very shy) then had another stroll along the road to see if I could find another river access (I kinda did but turned back as it was now getting a bit drizzly).

Popped up to the farmhouse with cheese & crackers for an evening drinkies with Kaye, Keith & Jet while louis kept his germs to himself and sorted dinner. Lovely chat with Kaye - she is so hospitable and interesting. We shared a few stories about travel & holidays while Jet & Keith enjoyed the rugby, and watched the piwakawakas dancing outside the window ❤️

Back to Banjo for dinner (flat chook and veggies) followed by blogging & admin then an early night.
